Essential Beliefs in Islam (Iman Mufassal)
A Muslim must believe in:
- God (Allah)
- His angels
- All His prophets
- His revealed books
- The Day of Judgment
- Predestination (Taqdir)
- Life after death
Faith (Iman) must be affirmed by words (Shahaada bil Lisan), accepted wholeheartedly, and followed by good deeds (Amal).
The Article of Faith – Shahaadah
Shahaadah (Testimony of Faith):
“La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad ur-Rasul Allah”
(There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger.)
Requirements of Shahaadah:
- Recited aloud at least once in life.
- Understood and believed sincerely.
- Practiced until death.
It is the first and last words a Muslim hears and signifies total commitment to God.
Meaning of Shahaadah:
- Negation: Rejects false gods.
- Affirmation: Declares Allah as the sole Creator and Sustainer.
No one else—angels, prophets, or saints—shares in His divinity. Only One God is to be worshipped.
Quranic Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285
Transliteration: Aamana ar-Rasoolu bimaa unzila ilayhi min Rabbihi wal-mu’minoon, kullun amana billahi wa malaa’ikatihi wa kutubihi wa rasulihi.
English Translation: “The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers.”
Hadith Reference:
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in destiny, both its good and bad.“
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 8)
Difference Between Iman e Mufassal and Iman e Mujammal
Emphasis: Iman-e-Mujmal emphasizes the core belief in Allah as the one God with all His attributes. Iman-e-Mufassal, while still including belief in Allah, places a greater emphasis on the other articles of faith, like angels, prophets, and the Day of Judgment.
Purpose: Iman-e-Mujmal is often used as a simpler declaration for those new to Islam or for children. Iman-e-Mufassal is a more comprehensive statement for those who have a deeper understanding of the faith.
Recitation: Iman-e-Mujmal is shorter and easier to recite, making it suitable for daily prayers or quick reminders of faith. Iman-e-Mufassal, due to its length, might be recited less frequently, perhaps during specific occasions or for deeper reflection.
